Tunbridge Wells FC — A Brief History
Football has been played in Tunbridge Wells since 1886, making the Wells one of the oldest clubs in Kent. Over the years the club has competed under several names and at a number of grounds across the town before eventually settling at the Culverden Stadium, which has been its home for much of the post-war era.
In the early decades, Tunbridge Wells established itself as one of the county’s leading non-league clubs. The team regularly attracted four-figure crowds, enjoyed memorable FA Cup runs and competed in the Kent League, Southern League and London Combination. One of the club’s finest achievements came in 1954/55, when the Wells reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup and completed a memorable treble by winning the Kent Senior Cup, Kent Senior Shield and Kent League Cup.
Financial difficulties brought the club to an end in 1967, but supporters quickly ensured its survival by reforming Tunbridge Wells FC. Since then, the club has continued to enjoy success, winning the Kent League Championship in 1985 and lifting the Kent League Cup on four occasions.
Another memorable moment arrived in 2005, when Tunbridge Wells made football history by winning the longest penalty shoot-out in a senior FA Cup match, defeating Littlehampton Town 16-15 after 40 penalties. Under Martin Larkin, the club lifted the Kent Senior Trophy in 2012/13 before enjoying a remarkable run to the FA Vase Final at Wembley, the greatest achievement of the modern era.
In recent seasons, the Wells have remained competitive in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division, regularly challenging in mid-table while continuing to develop both on and off the pitch. Steve Ives remains in charge for the 2026/27 campaign as Tunbridge Wells looks to build on its proud history and push towards the top end of the table once again.
