HYTHE TOWN …. a brief history
Hythe Town Football Club was formed in August 1910, with roots in local football stretching back to the previous century. After early success in the Folkestone and District Leagues, the club moved to the Kent Amateur League in 1936. In the 1970s, under manager Bob Davis, Hythe won three straight league titles and the Kent Junior Cup, earning senior status and joining the Kent League in 1977, playing at their new home, Reachfields Stadium.
In 1988, developer Tony Walton took over, rapidly transforming the club. Major ground improvements were made, and Hythe won the Kent League in 1988/89 with a record 133 goals. Promotion to the Southern League followed, and a historic FA Vase semi-final run drew a record crowd of 2,147. Despite success in multiple cups, financial strain took its toll. By 1992, the club was liquidated.
Reformed as Hythe United, the team worked back up, regaining senior status and rejoining the Kent League in 1995. Renamed Hythe Town in 2001, they steadily improved under Paul Fisk. Highlights included an FA Cup win over Dover Athletic in 2007/08 and promotion push efforts under Scott Porter.
The 2010/11 season was the club’s finest—winning the Kent League title and reaching the FA Cup First Round Proper, where they lost to League Two’s Hereford United. Continued strong form followed, including a Kent Senior Cup win and a play-off appearance in 2012/13, with Dave Cook earning the Golden Boot.
After managerial changes, Clive Cook led a remarkable revival in 2015/16, finishing fourth. Striker Alfie May’s 49 goals earned him a move to Doncaster Rovers. Sam Denly and later Steve Watt guided Hythe through strong campaigns, narrowly missing the play-offs several times. Zak Ansah won the Golden Boot in 2018/19 with 32 goals.
COVID-19 interrupted the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons. Watt returned in 2021/22, leading Hythe to the 2022/23 Isthmian South-East Play-off Final, narrowly losing to Whitehawk. In 2023/24, a strong FA Trophy run ended in the fourth round. Watt resigned late in the season and was succeeded by Sammy Moore, then Nick Davis in 2024, after Moore’s brief tenure. The changes of management caused for a turbulent time and the club was relegated at the end of the 24/25 campaign.
Ira Jackson is the new man in charge and leads the club for our 2025/26 season in the Southern Counties East League.
