SCEFL Challenge Cup Final
Corinthian 1-1 Erith Town
(3-5 on pens)
Erith Town won the 2023/24 Challenge Cup after a dramatic penalty shoot-out against Corinthian.
The 90 minutes of game action lacked quality and cutting edge, neither keeper made a save of note and chances were rare and easily squandered.
With the only clear cut opportunity of the first half Corinthian took the lead.
Michael Hagan seized on a defensive error, and sprinted through for a one-on-one with Mackenzie Foley. He calmly slid it past the Erith town stopper and the Hoops had the lead.
The second half was similar to the first. The ball spent too much time in the air and the Dockers were struggling to find their way back in to this final.
However, with 5 minutes to go, Jake Lovell raced into the box was brought down and it was a simple decision for Will Donnelly to point to the spot.
James Dyer stepped up and stroked the spot kick home for the leveller.
With no extra-time in the competition this year we went straight to penalties and at the third kick Foley saved from Ahmed Futa.
James Miles had the honours of the decisive kick, which he didn’t waste, and Erith Town are this year’s League Cup Champions.
Our thanks to our fabulous hosts – Hollands & Blair FC and all at Star Meadow.
