Phoenix Sports Confirm Jake Goodman as New First Team Manager
Phoenix Sports have confirmed that club captain Jake Goodman has been appointed as their new First-Team Manager, with highly-regarded coach James Marrs joining the dugout as First-Team Coach.
Goodman, 31, stepped into the role on an interim basis earlier this month following the departure of Darren Anslow and has since overseen a strong upturn in results. In his three games in temporary charge, Phoenix went unbeaten – recording a 4-1 FA Vase win over Sporting Bengal, a 1-1 draw at Punjab United, and an eye-catching 4-1 league victory over Hythe Town.
The former Millwall and AFC Wimbledon defender will continue his playing role at the Mayplace Ground, where he has already notched 15 appearances and five goals this season.
Joining him in the dugout is James Marrs, a coach with an impressive CV that includes spells at Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic. Marrs’ track record in developing players and driving high standards is expected to be a major asset as Phoenix look to build momentum.
Speaking on his appointment, Goodman said:
“I want to say how privileged I feel to have been trusted with this opportunity and I’ll be giving everything I can both on and off the pitch. I want to thank Tony Crowder, the club’s Chairman, for his belief in us – he has been brilliant with me ever since I signed for the club.
The message to the players is clear: keep working hard, keep improving, and keep believing. We’ve shown what we can do in recent matches, but we have to maintain those levels week in, week out.
This is a great club with brilliant supporters and the ambition is to grow it into something even more special.”
Chairman Tony Crowder added:
“After a lengthy process, this is a really exciting moment for Phoenix. Jake has been a fantastic captain and we know he will carry that same passion and leadership into management. He knows the club and has the respect of the dressing room.
To also add someone of James Marrs’ calibre as coach is a massive boost – his experience at top levels of the game shows the quality of coaching we’re bringing in. Together, they represent the fresh energy and ambition that will help drive Phoenix forward.”
Goodman’s first game as permanent manager comes on Friday night in front of what is expected to be a bumper Groundhop crowd, as Phoenix host Corinthian at the Mayplace Ground. Adding extra spice to the occasion, it will also mark the return of former Sports boss Keith McMahon in the visitors’ dugout.
