Lingfield 0-7 Ashford United
SCEFL Challenge Cup
Greenwich Borough 1-0 Phoenix Sports
Stuart Zanone made history on this day in 2015 by scoring all 7 goals in a 7-0 win for Ashford United at Lingfield.
The 29 year old striker bagged a hat-trick in the first half and followed it up with an incredible four more in the second period to claim a new club record.
Zanone took his tally for the season to 44 and the day after told Kent Sports News how the achievement was only just sinking in after a good night’s sleep:
“I’m pleased, excited and glad we won. I think it’s just starting to sink in as last night I wasn’t that bothered. It’s quite a nice feeling.”
“At half time they looked dead and buried and I though I might get one or two more in the second half, but I thought some of the other boys would score.”
“They kept looking for me and everything fell for me and I was glad to get the next four!”
When you score seven goals in one game, a striker could be forgiven for forgetting how they all went in, but Zanone remembers all of them, and always will:
“I can remember every one – I think the sixth was my best. I scored just the one tap in and the rest were all good goals and all seven were with my right foot!”
“If I ever have grandchildren, I will let them know!”
Unsurprisingly Ashford finished the season as the top scorers and ended the year in second place in the table.
One place below them were Erith & Belvedere, and they picked up a point tonight after a 1-1 draw at home to Lordswood. Adam Marsh equalised an earlier Ryan Restell effort from the visitors.
In the Challenge Cup it was semi-final second leg time with Greenwich Borough and Phoenix Sports level at 1-1 following the first game the week before.
An early Gary Alexander effort was enough to split them tonight sending Borough through to the final, which they would win against Tunbridge Wells.
